PAUSE. 2019. Mixed media animation.
Pause is a moving-image streetscape that invites viewers to “take a pause” and explore the intricacies of the world that are often missed in the hustle and bustle of modern life. The piece’s audio-visual elements, comprising of field recordings and animation of clouds, plants, birds, chimney smoke, flickering lights and falling jacaranda blooms, pull the viewers into the decadence of standing still in a suburban world.

On Process:
Pause is a piece I created in 2019 when deep in the trenches of parenting two young children and working full time. One morning, overwhelmed with the morning rush of readying everyone for school, I stepped outside onto my patio and realised the jacarandas were blooming and that I had been so busy that I hadn’t even noticed the seasons had changed. I took a moment to pause and truly appreciate the beautiful trees that turn my suburb purple each spring.
This piece aims to capture this feeling - the decadence of noticing and appreciating the lovely little things that surround you each day. To create Pause, I took reference video and photos from my street and then replicated the flowers in cut painted paper. I drew and collaged various elements to create a streetscape and arranged them digitally in Photoshop. Finally, I recorded field sound of my suburb and animated the elements in After Effects.
Painted paper collage, digital collage, pen drawing, pastel drawing, photography, field sound recording, and digital animation.
